Nellis gave us the statement of
"Look I’m a caring person, but I’ve had to make my own way in life – just like my grandparents did when they came to this country. Families who are poor have basically got no one to blame but themselves. I’m not paying to support them and their needs." and asked our thoughts about it.
If a person is motivated to elevate their situation then I fully agree with "my tax dollars" going to programs to try and help them out, it is when people are not motivated or abuse the system that I disagree with taxpayers money funding these programs. For instance, when someone is completely capable of working and they choose to remain on employment insurance because they are too lazy to find a job. Or the single parents who are on welfare but spend that money on booze, drugs etc instead of caring for the needs of their child.
There are a lot of programs in Alberta to help families in poverty but there are families that either don't reach out for the help, or abuse the system - which is unfortunate, because that is how these families get stereotyped. Schools have steeped up more with the programs for kids - they have nutrition programs, backpack programs, winter wear programs as well as connections to sport groups that help financially - so that every child has a chance to be part of a team. I try to help out where I can and I think this is something I will always try to help out with - especially the families with young children - these kids did not request / nor make the choices in life to be living the way they are.
