On February 6th in class we discussed Zimmerman's book "Family and Civilization". Zimmerman's book is about the family and the state (government agencies etc) Rob expressed this as the Family and the State being in a dance with one another - when one leads the other follows and vice-verse. I liked this example that he used, as I believe this is how it should be.
I believe that the state and family relationship needs to have a balanced relationship. The state needs to be involved when necessary and I believe for the most part that is how it is now in Canada. I know there are people who think differently but I for one believe there are government agencies and programs in place to assist those families that need it. For instance - child tax benefit, GST credit etc - is based off of your income and more is awarded to those families who are in lower tax brackets than others and I support this.
This is how the state and families relationship should be - Balanced. Although at times it is not - the state contributes more when needed and when the family is at its peak - the states contributions are not needed but I believe it should always end with it being balanced.
